Tri Club - Jan 2010

Spring 2010 season is upon us!

We have a BUSY semester ahead of us with The Texas State Sprint Triathlon, Collegiate Nationals, and Lonestar! ...In that order...back to back weekends!

April will be busy!
Check out the Event and Texas State Sprint Tri pages for more information

There is a new practice schedule posted as well with a few notes being:

*Notice the new swim is now on Monday evenings instead of Friday afternoons due to the coaches availability. This swim is during 'open swim' hours, but we have been given special permission to use it at this time with lane guarantees. So we need to be sure to follow all the rules, be out in time, be courteous, clean up, and try to leave plenty of room for open swimmers.

*The bike rides scheduled on Saturdays will change due to personal schedules on occasion. Email the appropriate person to verify time/location (Listed on schedule)

*The practice schedule lists a meeting on Tuesdays following SMRC runs. This is for anyone willing to help with the big ol' Texas State Sprint Triathlon. Please remember that in order to take advantage of the benefits of the Texas State Triathlon Club, you must help with this event.

We also have a new advisor! Bricio did a terrific job, but has moved on and passed the position onto Dr. Bill DeSoto!

We had a successful first meeting last Thursday with the next scheduled for February 4th 2010!

End of the semester!

Now that practices have officially ended for the Fall 2009 semester, it is time to start planning for Spring 2010!

With a busy tri semester ahead here are a few big events:

Texas State Sprint Tri
- THE BIG FUNDRAISER! Sign up is online now and can be accessed through the team website!
http://texasstatetri.com/default_files/Page898.htm

Be sure to set aside this date for a night and morning of volunteering and raising funds for future team expenses!

Collegiate Nationals
It's what we train for.

Hosted in Lubbock, TX this is the event where all the hard working triathletes at universities around the nation get together to compete head-to-head.

Qualifying may be necessary to compete in the Olympic distance for the Texas State Team, but the Sprint distance is open to anyone! We will begin planning when we return!

The Lonestar Triathlon
The beautiful, pancake flat race held in Galveston, TX.

After competing in this race prior years, it has now become tradition. This wonderfully hosted race is one that is great for all levels of triathlete. This year is going to be no different, with the option of a Sprint, Olympic and 70.3 distance.

Volunteering/Quad

So we will be volunteering at the Longhorn 70.3 Oct 25th at 6:00am.

Please be there to help out and give back to the sport of triathlon and the TXS team - It's a ton of fun. We will be carpooling up there, just get in contact with someone if you need a ride.

---

The idea of serving food in the quad was also mentioned, we were thinking something healthy ~ Maybe salads, wraps, grilled food...

We'll talk about it at the next meeting.

---

Have an idea for a race in the Spring? Bring it up! We are now planning for next semester's races.

-----------------------------------------------------------
SafePassingNewsletterIMG
Dear fellow Texas cyclists,

As you may know, Governor Perry has vetoed the Safe Passing Bill (
SB 488). This bill would have made Texas roads safer by requiring motorists to give three feet clearance when passing a cyclist or other vulnerable road user. We are deeply disappointed in the Governor's decision.

Preparation for the next legislative session starts the day after the close of the last session. In addition to our ongoing work in statewide children's bike safety education and Congressional lobbying for bike infrastructure funding in the upcoming 2010 Federal Transportation Bill, we are already building the foundation for the 2011 Texas Legislature.

What you can do:
There are several ways you can show your support for Safe Passing in Texas!

Sign the Petition! Cyclists and other concerned Texans can register their support by signing the attached petition. We will use this petition to further build our relationship with a broad range of Legislators and other public officials.

Forward this message! Send this as an email to friends and relatives, including those who walk, run or work on Texas roadways. Urge them to sign as well.

Gather Signatures! Go to www.BikeTexas.org/petition and download a PDF petition form.

Link to the petition! Go to the www.BikeTexas.org/petition and download a "Sign the Petition" button for your website, or the website of your bike club or shop, then link it to the petition page.

Write a letter! Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper expressing why you disagree with the Governor's veto. Some points you could include:
  • Over 1,000 vulnerable road users were killed last year and this bill could have saved lives.
  • A personal story about a time a motorist passed you unsafely.
  • The health and environmental benefits of cycling and how increased safety encourages more people to ride.
Join BikeTexas! There is strength in numbers! In each of the past four Legislative sessions, the Safe Passing Bill has moved closer and closer to becoming Texas law. We need to join together to make sure that in the next fight, we will WIN!

Thank you for your participation and support.

NSO Sessions

Here is a little information about what NSO (New Student Orientation) sessions are and why it is important that we be there to represent the team:

———

What: All freshman come to the SRC to get a quick tour and information about Campus Rec. approximately 350 students each night will stop by the Sport Club tables in groups of 25 for approximately 5 minutes. So be excited and interactive.

When: 4:45pm – 7:00pm (June 11,15,18,22,25) & (July 13,15,20,22,27,29)

Why: Your chance to advertise and recruit to all the incoming freshman at your table for your club. Plus your last chance to earn points for next year’s funding $$$$

Bring: At least one member of your team, email signup sheet, tryout information, table decorations.

———

So as you can see, it is important that we have a representative of the team at the NSO sessions in order to get new members and earn funding. If you are available at all any of those days please let me know
